Wind Mitigation Survey and Home Owners Insurance
Did you know that a Wind Mitigation Survey can save you any where from 5% to 25% off your insurance premium. The Survey is usually conducted by a Licensed Engineer and Survey Company. Most Insurance Agents have the number to a variety of Licensed Surveyors and the cost is usually $150 or less per location. Once the survey is completed, the data is sent to the carrier and received by the underwriter who will give you a credit based on the information. The credits are based on how well secured your roof is tied to the walls. The credit usually takes 30 to 45 days to be applied and will be retro-active to the inception of your current policy. Then you will have this credit for years to come. The Wind Mitigation Survey can only help you, so do not worry about what they may or may not find, they can only give you credits not debits.
Moreover, Property Insurance rates have come down for home owners the last three years, and this is due in part to not having a Hurricane hit our shores since Wilma in 2005. The insurance industry has been able to maintain rates that are much more palatable, and have not paid out the large sums of money in property claims that were paid in recent years. This is actually an excellent time of the year to look at your insurance policies and go over what coverage’s you have and may need before hurricane season arrives. Most Insurance Carriers are much more willing to add coverage’s and policies when the air is cool and the sea is calm.
