Just because the U.S. acquired Florida from Spain in 1821, didn't mean it came easy.
The City of Fort Lauderdale is named after the series of three forts built by the U.S. (the first by a Major Lauderdale) during the Seminole Wars (fought to forcibly relocate the Indians). 

The picturesque residential areas near the coast with its intricate system of waterways and canals is what comes to mind when you think of life in Fort Lauderdal is that everybody has a boat but the City is much larger than the narrow strip with ocean access along its eastern edge.  Although the 2006 Census estimate put the population 185,804, there are an estimated 42,000 boats making the "Venice of America" nickname seem appropriate.

The downtown area is growing. A clean vibrant area, there are 2 shopping and dining meccas that residents and tourists flock to: Riverwalk and Las Olas.  The residential areas offer a big variety of homes in size and price. The city also plays host to the annual International Boat Show, which can see the population of Fort Lauderdale almost doubled by the influx of visitors.


The reliance on tourism in Fort Lauderdale means that there is excellent provision of leisure and recreational services in the city, with a huge selection of nightclubs and restaurants, many interesting museums, and a rapidly developing downtown area. There is also an attractive beach, alongside which lies a State Park.
